October 1, 2020 -The study, which informs this week’s chart, reports that across the U.S. during the 2010s, 96,544 units were created in 778 buildings that were formerly schools, factories, offices or other nonresidential spaces. (The study only considered buildings with 50 or more units.) In the 2000s, 63,989 units in 467 buildings were converted. Back in the 1950s, just 2,002 units in 14 buildings across the country were converted. Not surprisingly, New York topped the list for most residential units, although several cities converted more buildings.

January 19, 2023 -Recently on the market for £975,000 ($1.2m), this London loft is part of Colina House, once a factory where Rest Cartwright & Son manufactured church organs from the late-Victorian period up until the 1960s. While the building was reconfigured first into a collection of artists’ studios in the 1980s, and ultimately into three residential homes, echoes of its musical manufacturing past can still be found in its architectural detail.

May 22, 2019 -DAGA Architects subverted the traditional Chinese courtyard with a “floating island” meeting space in the center of the largest room, which hovers over small, partially enclosed workspaces. The apartments are ultra-compact and feature a lot of transforming furniture to save space. Perhaps the best-known example of converting a factory into a residence is Ricardo Bofill’s private home in Spain.
July 15, 2019 -Enterprising real estate developers swooped in, transforming dilapidated buildings into private residences, with exposed brick, hardwood floors and giant windows that hint at the building’s past.
